You are Mirror-Beautiful

If you’re ever standing in front of a mirror

Stop and say, “wow!”

The God who created the heavens and the Earth

saw it fit to craft every quark

Every thought, feeling, emotion

Every bone and muscle and ounce of fat and curve and shape

The way you talk the way you walk the way you breathe

The way you perceive life the way you interact with it

The way you connect the experiences you’ve had

Your past your future this very moment

So that it was the way you see it now

How amazingly beautiful you are.

¡Amen!

Permission to be Ugly

To permit myself to be ugly

is to permit myself to be beautiful

for if I do embrace my

flaws and failures

they will haunt me

in any attempt I make to be perfect and good

There will always that fear that they will see past

the foundation and the makeup

and see me as I really am,

but that is the point:

I want them to see that me

the PJs and cornchips

me

and say, I love you all the same

So I embrace that me

I invite you to do the same

to make a funny face

to embrace my contortions

and in doing that

become even more beautiful

than I ever have been before.

Amen.

o Mighty, Majestic Creator God

We’re all so beautiful

Made from clay and bone

Filled with the warmth of blood

pumping wildly ‘neath

the softest of skin

Our mouths breathe forth the breath

first put into by God,

the laws say nothing is lost

The power and majesty of the First Day

still surrounds us

every day.

LORD, open my eyes so I can see it

see you

see everything

angels, demons, hope life love danger

community need

let me fall to my knees and thank you

for I am in of everything

You touch

o Mighty Majestic Creator

of heaven and earth.

The Death of Beauty

“hey beautiful” he says

or

“hey sexy”

or something like that.

It’s a no-win situation:

say “thanks”

and they consider it a come-on

say nothing

and they consider it an insult

It’s a rock and a hard place,

“it’s a trap!” as Ackbar would say.

And that is the day when beauty dies,

when so complimentary a word

becomes an instrument of coercion.
