Menudo and Jesus

We Mexicans love

our bonus material

the brain, the tongue,

the intestine, the fat

it’s all incredibly delicious

and respects the whole animal

not just the pretty parts

Nothing goes to waste

So too does nothing go

to waste with God

our bodies our experiences

the way we speak and think

nothing is overlooked

Our habit is to disregard that part of us

or ignore this experience

so that we can come up with a commercially viable

and easily identifiable product

the fact of the matter is it is all

part of a design, mind-blowing and seemingly unrelated

as it may appear.

We must continue to look to God

for answers,

lest we settling for picking through life

looking for all the pretty bits.

Reflections on the Embody Project

A few months back, I had the opportunity to participate in the Embody Project. What an amazing opportunity. Here are my reflections on the event:

Present and Grateful

Me and my body have been all over the place. I’ve been the fat kid, the skinny kid, and now I’m me.

I love being me. It’s a weird and wonderful thing.

To sit in-between the Bebe Theater and the adjacent Methodist church was the perfect way to prepare for the shoot.

I loved the chance to sit down with Erica and Trey and talk before we began, because this really is a conversation, a conversation that I have had with my body for years, that I had with them in that moment, and that I am having with you now. The conversation never ends.

Then it was time to disrobe. It felt so natural, even with the cameras. I love to act (hence the theater setting), so being on stage in front of the cameras felt completely comfortable to me.

Then came my favorite part, the moment we began to play. Sitting in the chair, standing up and singing Sondheim, improvising a monologue in the style of immersion theater, getting down on the floor to match Erica’s angle: this is the stuff of dreams. And, finally, when all the talking and moving were done, it felt so right to sit across from one another and take the moment in.

There is beauty in the stillness. There is beauty in the motion. There is beauty in the moment, in the skin we are in, in the blood pumping through our veins, through the God-given Spirit in our souls. It’s all a gift.

To hug and reflect as I stood, reclothed, back between the church and the theater was the perfect way to end.

And now it’s your turn, to let your own journey begin. Take it and let it lead you to wonderful places.

Your body is blessed. Amen.

Your Clothes Are Lying to You

Sometimes you’re too tall, then too shot

then too fat too thin

you’re the wrong color the wrong shape

or just the wrong feel

Even the same size even the same cut

will betray you depending on the day

Remember always, you are inherently beautiful

no matter what your clothes say

Transubstantiation

When we accept the redeeming blood of Christ

into our veins

When we invite the Spirit of the Living God

into our souls

Our very bodies are not our own

Yes, we have traded our mortal flesh

for the eternal skin of God

When we walk through life

it should not be you they see

but Jesus Christ returned,

ready to do miracles

feed the poor

hang with the lowly

hear the voice of the Father

and live intentionally,

bearing His sufferings

for the greater good.

Tension Check-in

The crown of your head: your connection to Heaven

In between your eyes: all that you think and see

Your throat: what you say and ingest

Your chest: where your lifeblood and passions flow

Your core: balance and breathing

Your lower abdomen: your gut and loins

Your lower back: base of the spine, your connection to the earth

Are any of these out of whack? Where are you twisted and tense? Breathe deep. Relax. Get centered.

It’s the whole body we’re seeking to repair. Like any good vehicle, it only works best when all is in check.

You are Mirror-Beautiful

If you’re ever standing in front of a mirror

Stop and say, “wow!”

The God who created the heavens and the Earth

saw it fit to craft every quark

Every thought, feeling, emotion

Every bone and muscle and ounce of fat and curve and shape

The way you talk the way you walk the way you breathe

The way you perceive life the way you interact with it

The way you connect the experiences you’ve had

Your past your future this very moment

So that it was the way you see it now

How amazingly beautiful you are.

¡Amen!
