Present

“Are you ready?” he said with his handlebar mustache and cologne.

“I believe so,” he said with his baseball cap hung low on his face.

He extracted from his person a gold watch. His guest’s eyes twinkled as they saw it.

He took a moment, then undid the clasp.

Suddenly, the cafe around them froze. Coffee stopped pouring. Customers ceased from talking. The world stood suspended in time.

Out from the opened pocket-watch arose a great light: a fairy with translucent wings. It danced about the cafe. He watched it, a boy again.

As it flew over the man’s hand, he caught it and handed it to his guest.

“It’s yours now,” he said.

The guest reached over and took it

“What shall I do with it?” he said.

“That’s up to you,” said the man, “but I pray you do something beautiful.”

The guest took it. It sparkled in his hand, dissolved into his skin. Her eyes shone an iridescent blue.

“I will do just that said,” he said.

The world began to move again. The man disappeared, but his guest remained, iridescent as ever and ready to take on the day.

Truth and Judgement

I am a child of light

but it’s so easy to be tempted into the dark.

In the dark there is judgement and fear,

in the light there is hope and joy.

Why do I stray?

I stray because I am human.

Yet, Jesus, who is divine,

always beckons me back.

Sometimes I fear God,

but He always welcomes me.

He must speak truth now and again,

cutting out what is evil,

but He always replaces it with good.

In darkness,

all there is is spoiled food,

appealing but rotten.

I rejoice in the Holy Banquet of the Divine,

it tastes as wonderful as it smells.

Every time I find myself starving,

He calls dinnertime.

How fast I run to His bosom,

into His outstretched arms.

I am His child, forever and always.

Shadow People

It’s easy to live in shadows. We’ll have full conversations, live lifetimes with people that aren’t really there.

We’ll celebrate victories we’ve never had, fear obstacles we’ve never faced.

We’ll content ourselves or beat ourselves up for being people we aren’t at all.

My friends, shed light on the shadow people. Seek truth where it can be found.

Life is meant to be experienced not in imagined experiences, but in real events we can learn from and savor.

Peace, Brother!

People fight, they do

it’s part of life

but it doesn’t have to define us

We fight today, we make up tomorrow

We fight not to divide but to wake up the senses,

we want peace to win

There’s a time to clench fists

and a time to let go

Me? I’ve lost all the sensation down there

The blood vessels are too restricted

So, I’m letting go

Let’s shake hands

Peace brother,

God be with you!

Dark Figures

EXT. DESERT – NIGHT

TWO HOODED FIGURES stare out at the horizon. The sun falls.

FIGURE #1

The dark is coming.

FIGURE #2

We will take him.

FIGURE #1 nods.

EXT. DESERT- NIGHT

FIGURE #1 lights small fires around the campsite.

FIGURE #2

What is it like?

FIGURE #1

The dark? Evil.

FIGURE #2

But what is it like?

The FIGURE #1 does not respond.

EXT. DESERT- NIGHT

FIGURE #1 sits and stares out into the darkness. FIGURE #2 paces.

FIGURE #2

It should be here by now.

FIGURE #1

Patience.

A HISS sounds. FIGURE #1 stands.

FIGURE #2

(excitedly)

Is that him?

FIGURE #1 stretches out his hands. LIGHT sprouts from his palms.

FIGURE #2 (CONT’D)

Yes!

The hiss grows louder and louder. It is almost on top of them when it stops. FIGURE #2 spins about.

FIGURE #2

Where did it go?

With a shriek, the DARK attacks. Strikes FIGURE #1 in the chest, strikes FIGURE #2 in the face.

FIGURE #2 topples back and falls over, cradling his face.

FIGURE #2 (CONT’D)

My eyes! My eyes!

FIGURE #2 strikes the ground. He gropes about wildly.

FIGURE #2

Master, are you there? Master, please. I can’t see. Somebody. Please.

EXT. DESERT- NIGHT

FIGURE #2 weeps over his master’s dead body. The DARK flutters away.

EXT. DESERT- DAY

FIGURE #2 sits cross-legged and breathes. The fires burn around him.

TIME LAPSE: the sun rises, pinnacles, and descends on our hero.

EXT. DESERT- NIGHT

FIGURE #2 remains sitting. The DARK takes on physical form, walks around him.

DARK

Do you give up?

FIGURE #2

Not as long as I have breath.

FIGURE #2 stands. The DARK laughs, grabs FIGURE #2’s throat.

DARK

What can you do? You are powerless.

FIGURE #2

Not as long as I am close enough to touch you.

The DARK looks down. FIGURE #2 places a hand upon his chest. LIGHT beams from FIGURE #2’s hand.

FIGURE #2 (CONT’D)

Goodbye.

The DARK tries to get away. FIGURE #2 grabs him, hugs him tight. Light engulfs them both.

EXT. DESERT- DAY

FIGURE #2 hobbles through the desert, slowly making his way through.
