I think it’s humbling and hilarious that we spend years out of our lives with our cards tightly pressed against our chest, not wanting to give anything up to God.
Jesus let’s us play our little game for a while, but eventually He just looks at us with a certain sadness and says, “Three of clubs, two of diamonds, king of hearts, ace of spades, and jack of diamonds.” After allowing us a moment of stupefied wonder, He leans in and says, “now, let’s talk about why you feel you need to beat me in the first place.”
So here’s the thing:
compost is essential to good gardening.
It’s like natural Miracle Grow
What’s in compost?
Food scraps, leaves. Things you tend to discard.
But you put it all together and give it some time,
it does some really cool stuff.
I think this is an important life lesson:
the soil doesn’t start good.
First we’ve got to get all our garbage out there.
It does it no good just sitting about in a corner of our kitchen,
but put it in the ground and give it time,
and good things happen.
So air out your garbage and see what good fruit comes from it.
There are the things we talk about.
Then, there are the things we wish we could talk about.
It’s in the moments when we safely experience the latter
that we truly feel free.
You take your burden
and you give it to me;
I take my burden
and give it someone else;
together, we bear each other’s burdens
and Christ is more than capable
of carrying what we cannot.
You take the chains off
and I ask, “now what do I do?”
and You say, “Go have fun
You’ve been somber far too long
and don’t wear solemnity well
